Safe and Sound is an accredited training provider with the ETDP SETA, is  registered with the DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION as a FURTHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING INSTITUTION and trains to a FET: National Certificate in EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT Level 4 ( #58761 )

Safe and Sound’s training programme is made up as follows:-

  • Introductory Process
    • Interview of learner
    • Initial site (existing or proposed) visit including interaction with community role players.
    • If a learner has no previous experience, they are required to volunteer for three days at an ECD centre designated by Safe and Sound in order for the learner to be sure that she understands the commitment she is making to caring for children.  It also gives Safe and Sound the opportunity to determine whether the learner has the ‘heart quality’ when dealing with children.
  • Eight week fulltime training –
    • Training 8.00am to 1.00pm, Monday to Friday, – practical application and training in ECD (Early Childhood Development) site classes.
    • Training 2.00pm to 4.00pm, Monday to Thursday, – theory.
    • Assignments, observations, interaction with children, making simple equipment included.
    • At the end of eight weeks, 380 hours (38 credits) have been accumulated, as follows:
      • Theory                       –          80 hours
      • Practical                    –          200 hours
      • Assignments, etc. –           100 hours

The curriculum includes visits to their local communities to stimulate thinking on how the business would be established, assistance with consultations with community leaders and preparation of a basic business plan.  The teaching aids made by the learners during the course form the basis of materials to be used in their edu-care centre.

An essential aspect of the training is a coaching and mentoring process, which follows the formal input and extends over a period of years in many cases.  Once the trainee has completed her formal training, she returns to her local community to establish her business.  A period of about three months is allowed for this to happen prior to any formal contact and follow up.  During this time, coaching and mentoring support from Safe and Sound is available upon request from the learner.

The follow up and mentoring process serves the purpose

  • of reinforcing skills acquired on the training programme and assisting with any obstacles encountered,
  • of assisting in the transition to a sustainable business,
  • of giving input in the application of skills acquired within the particular environment, and
  • of playing a crucial role in ensuring sustainable results.
  • Site Visits
    • 6 to 7 site visits are planned after the fulltime training and these may include any or all of the following (depending on the particular needs observed and requests of the learner):
      • Overview of practice at site
      • Discussion of and strategising with respect to challenges identified by the learner
      • Staff training
      • Parent workshop/meeting to transfer knowledge of methodology
      • Interaction with community role players
  • 4. Satellite Seminars (5 to 6 seminars per course)
  • In addition to the individual input through the mentoring process, seminars and workshops are held where trainees gather to

    • Workshop
    • Share experiences
    • Generally provide mutual support
    • Extend base knowledge of trainees e.g. science workshops
    • Keep abreast of developments and legislation in the field of ECD (Early Childhood Development)
